What is Active Directory

Microsoft Active Directory is the leading Directory services architecture available for the Windows platform and has been intrinsic to the operation of an efficient Windows environment since its introduction in 1999. Currently it is in its third iteration forming the basis of the Windows Server 2008 directory offering.

Why Active Directory

There has been a lot of confusion around Active Directory and why it is deployed. Squeeze believes it's main function is to enable organizations to better manage and leverage their Windows investment and provide them with a centralized master repository.

Major Benefits of Active Directory

A properly deployed and configured Active Directory can deliver the following centralized benefits:

  • Enterprise application configuration (i.e. Exchange 2003)
  • User, group and printer management
  • User and desktop configuration and control
  • Security across the Enterprise
  • Application delivery
  • Roaming user and secure logon services
  • Certificate Management
