Providing users with access to the right systems where ever they are working

Connecting users sounds simple but is a very wide topic that looks across a large range of technologies, products and solutions.

Users many require access to company email on a Smartphone or via the web, or constant access to internal documents and client / server applications. Or you may have two sites that need a permanent VPN so they can share data and applications.

A few questions to start the process:

  • What services / applications do you need to provide user access to and where are they located?
  • Who will be using the services and what devices do they use?
  • Is it client / server or web technology based?
  • Can DSL / Cable / T1 or some other type of connectivity be used?

Whether you are linking two or more office locations, providing access to your internal applications and data hosted at single or multiple points, company owned or third party provided you will have to consider some or all of the following:

  • Network connections technologies - Cable, DSL, etc
  • Network Access methods - VPN, VPN client types, HTTPS, etc
  • Authentication and Access Control - Directory Service, Device Specific, Multi-Factor methods, etc
  • Network Devices - Routers, VPN Servers, Firewalls, Network Appliances, etc
  • Security

The key is to keep the solutions simple, utilizing as few of the technologies as possible and tools you may already have, to offer users a familiar and consistent set of access methods that can be kept secure and managed well.
