Staying Secure
Ensure the risks to your Network, Data and Users are met head on
Security now ranks in the top three major concerns for IT Directors and those responsible for delivering IT to their organizations. In the digital environment we are threatened from attack both externally and internally to the business. With one hand we are given new ways to work and collaborate and with the other a new potentially exposed surface area to attack.
Your concerns may be around:
- How do we address these issues and what are the latest best practices and recommendations for us to adopt?
- We cannot keep up with all the patches, security releases and wizards that keep being released?
- Where are my current security loopholes?
- How do I ensure that internally my own staff cannot do damage either accidentally or maliciously?
Five Levels of Security
All organizations should implement and review security at the following levels to prevent attacks:
- Perimeter / Network Security - Access to your internal networks from external locations and external access by your internal resources needs to be securely controlled at all times.
- Host / Device Security - Ensuring your servers and PCs are configured to prevent specific machine attacks and have strong protection from viruses, spyware and spam along with intrusion attempts.
- Patch Management / Vulnerability Security - All systems should be patched with the recommended updates as provided by the product vendor and this should be reviewed frequently.
- Authentication and Authorization - Your business should have a written security and usage policy that specifies and implements password policies, ID and account management and defines what can and cannot be performed including file level security. Further tools to assist in this may be security tokens, encryption and Certificate Services.
- Business Continuity and Monitoring - If something does go wrong, then you need to ensure you are monitoring for issues and have the ability to recover from disasters or breaches.
